Our conversation with DJ Dream Journal

Dream Journal is set to perform at the Red Bull Sound Select event tonight at Chop Suey in Seattle. The Red Bull Sound Select Event Series was created to provide a platform for artists to develop, and break out new music. We had a chance to have a conversation with Dream Journal before the show. Check out our conversation below:

“So my first question is, how did you get the name Dream Journal?”

Dream Journal:

“Yeah, so I came up with the name because when I first got really serious about making music I started pulling all nighters, and pushing the can at both ends. And I was having the experience of not remember a song that I made the night before, and waking up and having the whole studio session be like some weird dream. Then I’d listen back to it and be like, “Oh damn, this is like my dream journal.” So it just came across like that.

“What age did you start to make music, and at what age did start to take music seriously?”

Dream Journal:

“I’ve been playing music more or less my entire life. Guitar, and keyboard, you know, those kind of starter instruments. Then when I was about 17, 18 I got really into DJ’ing, and started practicing DJ’ing a lot. And then, when I was about, I’d say when I was 18 is when I first started producing music, and then I got really serious about it about 20 or 21.”

“What is your recording process? What does it look like?”

“Do you try to stick with Seattle artists or do you the artists range?”

Dream Journal:

“In terms of like who I collaborate with?”

“Yeah.”

Dream Journal:

“Yeah. I mean I’m definitely open to collaborations with anyone. It’s definitely easier to get in the studio with someone in Seattle just cause …”

“You’re here.”

Dream Journal:

“I know studios, and yeah it’s where I am.”

Dream Journal:

:But I have studios I can go to here to get high quality recordings and everything. But if there’s someone else that’s out there that wants to collaborate you know I’m definitely open to that.”

“So if you had to define your style, and I know it’s hard… how would you define it?”

Dream Journal:

“Yeah so I’ve heard recently  [its like] abstract pop. So like sort of just the idea of taking conventional pop ideas and putting new flavors on them and incorporating other styles of music to a more kind of warm sound.”

“What is your favorite genre to mix to? pop?”

Dream Journal:

“You mean in terms of what I like to play in my DJ sets?”

“Yes.”

Dream Journal:

“No. Not necessarily. I like to DJ a lot of the different styles.”

Dream Journal:

“I wouldn’t say that I very often would play other pop music out at a club or something like that, just cause anyone can do that.”

Dream Journal:

“But when it comes to making music, I am interested in making pop music. Definitely.”

”If you could collaborate with one artist right now, who would it be?”

Dream Journal:

“Holy shit. That’s a hard question.”

“Okay, how bout two.”

Dream Journal:

“Two okay. Well shit. I’d love, I mean I think I’d benefit the most from working with like you know an amazing singer.”

Dream Journal:

“But you know there’s a lot of really amazing singers out there and it might be the best business decision to make a song with Rihanna or something like that, but I feel like what I would much prefer is get in the studio with a producer I really respect. And the first thing that comes to mind is Jamie XX.”

“Oh, yeah.”

Dream Journal:

”Jamie XX. Yeah. I think I would love to just like get a chance to get to work with him.”

“I could see that”

Dream Journal:

“Oh you know what, I take that all back. And I would want to say the person I would want to work with is Drake.”

“Drake?”

Dream Journal:

“Yeah.”

“Yeah that would be a hit for sure.”

Dream Journal:

“Yeah. He’s got the Midas touch.”

“Yeah for sure. He absolutely does. He absolutely does.”

“Okay so being from Seattle, I’ve heard that the music scene here is different than it is in other parts of the country. How do you maneuver through this scene here?”

Dream Journal:

“Yes. There’s a really special thing happening in Seattle right now. You know there’s a lot of really rich traditions in Seattle. Like our rock tradition is you know, Nirvana obviously. For jam, it’s Jimi Hendrix.”

Dream Journal:

“But I feel like now present day Seattle, we have a very current thing going on and that’s really just a blending of worlds. There’s a lot of people here who are willing to experiment.”

Dream Journal:

“And just in general are really talented and all are musically very inclined. So you know there’s anything, a pop singer. There’s a really amazing electronics scene.”

Dream Journal:

“You know most recently like Odessa is from Seattle. We have these really big artists coming out of here. So I think that all that kind of has this trickle down effect where they just pour their energy out and then people around them are able to kind of fly from that. And that just kind of creates this rich culture.”

“Right. That’s really dope.”

Dream Journal:

“Yeah totally. Yeah I think living in any big city that has like an art scene, it’s a pretty special thing to be able to do.”

“Yeah, you get an advantage for sure. For sure.”

Dream Journal:

“Yeah I think so.”

“So what is your favorite part about performing live on stage?”

Dream Journal:

“My favorite part of performing live. I just like to be able to share the music that I’ve made people. And I see how they react to it.”

“That’s Great.”

“And is this your first Red Bull event?”

Dream Journal:

“It is, yeah.”

“What are you looking most forward to?”

Dream Journal:

“I mean this deal is crazy.”

“Yeah.”

Dream Journal:

“Like Autograf. They’re amazing. I started listening to them a little while ago…  I really dig his stuff… so I’m just stoked to be a part of it. They did a great job putting it together.”

“So to the people that may be unfamiliar with your music, what is one song that you would point them to first, and what do you have upcoming that we can look forward to?”

Dream Journal:

“So the song I would say to go to, I put out a single last week.”

Dream Journal:

“It’s called Take You Home.”

Dream Journal:

“And it’s featuring the vocalist Maiah Manser.”

“It’s dope.”

Dream Journal:

“Yeah it’s phenomenal. And yeah so that’s the most recent, so that’s a good place to start and see where my head’s at right now. And then going forward I’ve got a couple songs coming out pretty soon. A couple of remixes.”

Dream Journal:

“Probably like a couple bootlegs, and then before summer I have EP to share.”

“Really?”

Dream Journal:

“Yeah, but it’s in the works right now, but that’s the plan.”

“So at the end of our interviews we like to give the artist a chance to just to tell your fans any one thing that you want to get off your chest..  So here’s your opportunity.”

“Anything you want to say. Anything.”

Dream Journal:

“I guess just thanks for sticking with me and being patient with me and I hope that you like what I’m picking up.”

Dream Journal:

“Coming out soon.”

“That’s dope. This summer right?”

Dream Journal:

“Yeah exactly. That’s the plan. I want to hit those summer waves.”

“That’s gonna be awesome. We’re looking forward to it. Thank you for a great conversation.”

Dream Journal:

“Awesome, thank you. I really appreciate.”
